December offered loads of winds. Unfortunately I payed a price.

During a stormsession I broke the tail of my beloved SOS rocket

fish 82.

This was the board I always brought with me. Nomatter where or

what sort of conditions.. It simply always worked. I knew the board

inside out. It was fast, super loose and turned on a dime.

It's a kind of a surfboard with a sail, instead of a windsurfboard

that's trying to be a surfboard. Sean nailed it with these Rocket fishes.

Sure, during the years the board got it's repairs and scars,...

normal after 6 years of heavy abuse.

But this time I'm not gonna repair her. It's time to rest.

One thing is for sure, the new boards that are on it's way got

loads of DNA of this beloved board ...

Slovenia, one of the smallest countries in the world. Just half the size

of Switserland. It's located south of Austria and east of Italy.

It measures 150 x 250 km and 20.275 km2 in area.

Never been in that country, but think thats gonna change...

Searching for info I came across so many interesting things. It got

mountains ( the real deal ones...), great nature, zillion of caves....

.. a small piece of coast

(Sure, I knew that already for a longer time, but till now

I never looked further to other boards than the ones in

my garage ;-)

Playing with boards in my head/on paper....., but time is the killer...

There's something they call evolution on it's way.

Knowing the guys at Flikka got all the hi-tech>cnc shape machine (=timesaving+ accurate) but what's even more important... they got all the skills (shaping/building/material knowledge), they know what they do and are passionate.

I decided to contact them..

And from one thing came another.

To be in short: there will a Flikka joint!

The cold night did some magic with the roof of the car

The day started nice. We got some new fresh snow. Higher in the mountains clouds and wind made it look sober. So we went into the forrest parts.

Here it's a mix of survival (don't crash into that tree), luck (find a nice path, so that you hold your speed going down the mountain) pumping adrenaline and fun.

Bad luck ;-) Big trees don't bend...

We had an amazing time. At the end of the day we made a wrong turn and ended in a river (big drop + water included..)....

Can happen, part of the game ;-)

We had to dig/climb ourselves out of the water/snow and a heavy deep snow walk followed.

Last week alot of snow came down in the Alps. We couldn't just sit down and wait. We

had to check it out. So after work we took the car and drove down to Allgau (South Germany, border area with Austria)

We arrived in amazing sceneries... Clear skies and thick powder snow

After a full day of work, driving all night, snowboarding all day.. without closing an eye..

we started to get tired ;-) That was a nice 38 hours nonstop shift!

On our last day in Portugal we went a little more inland to pick some fruits at the small farm my parents in law have. I love going there. I love being able to pick the best oranges and just eat them fresh of the tree.

Just like the Fool's Garden song ;-)

The surroundings are also very nice. There is a nice lake just in front.

I usually hate windless days, but the reflection in the water is just amazing when there's no wind at all.

On our trip home we had a stopover in San Sebastian. An amazing place if you like food. Of the six 3-star Michelin restaurants in Spain, 3 of them are in San Sebastian. The city has more Michelin stars per capita than any other city in the world. But not only the Michelin star restaurants are a reason to visit San Sebastian. There are a lot, and I mean A LOT!!, of amazing tapas bars. You can see that it's all about quality in this city. We normally hop in and out of several bars when we are there, but this time the weather really sucked. So we sticked to one bar and tried almost everything ;-)

Here are some of my favorites:

Foie gras.

Squid with spicy marmalade. "Not spicy sauce, spicy marmalade", the waiter said. And from now on, I wanna dip my eggrolls in spicy marmalade, because it's heaven ;-)

Sweet potato chips. My little girl's favorite ;-)

Can't wait to go there again....

During a walk in the forrest I came across this rainbow. The light was amazing!
After a while a second bow came through..

Later that day I picked up some posca pens and started drawing.. Rainbow/bright colors inspired. Almost automaticly boards came out my fingers... What else;-)

An extremely amount of snow dumped in the Alps. Causing big problems ...

You can also see it as a bonus.. perfect conditions to go out with the powder boards.

We've to check it out..What about a last minute trip?..

Paul went to Maui. He'll stay there for half a year... Working at Hotsails.

Planning was that I should visit him. Just like our previous Maui trip

But "unfortunatly" something came between it...

Will stay here in the lowlands, have to take care about things that come..

But Paul is leaking pics, after pics.... Messages about how nice it is.... etc..

The skies were sometimes impressive these holidays. We had a lot of clear blue sky, but when the clouds came they painted a nice picture. My previous posts already show some, here are a few more.

Doggy watching his owner surf ;-)

The surf was good too, but on some days I expected a little bigger waves.

On this day the swell forecast was over 5 meters, but the direction was too much north to give good waves at the jetty in Viana. Everywhere else the wind was too much onshore and it would only be white water.

But we also had nice waves and no wind.

And off course lots of days with off shore wind. Sometimes small and sometimes bigger waves.

Now it's time to slowly prepare for our trip home. Not sure what route we'll take, but we'll take our time.

Wondering how we get always that "beach"... sand in our house?...

1: work yourself through the forrest.. take some fine baths in muddy waters

2: when fully wet, follow the rabbits into their holes... and try to dig them out

3: continue, continue...

4: only come out if you hear the word: Food!

5: fall asleep and dryup next to the fireplace in the house

6: when dry, sand will automaticly drop off wherever you walk ( indoors ;-)

While I am in Portugal, conditions in Holland have been amazing. Lots of wind and relatively warm temperatures. So as we have to head back in the end of the week, I had a little sneak at the forecast for the week after. I know it's still far away, but if this turns out to be true, I have the perfect gift for Davids birthday ;-)

The temperatures have been really nice here in Portugal for the last two weeks. But what this guy does is close to suicide in the heat of summer. Imagine now!!

Afterwards he went running on the beach wearing nothing but his shorts. I guess he's what we call a "bikkel", or just plain crazy!!

Hmmm, tomorrow it's 2012.... which should we pick to start the year with ;-)

Pounding in the head

Got some serious pounding on the head today, waves were awesome. Tried to catch a few biggies, but they are still out of my league. Getting better though.... ;-) Surfed till sunset.

The world looks funny through a fish-eye lens.

Although it depends where you aim.

Parked on the jetty. This is a nice view, but the view in the other direction was nice too. Overhead waves, breaking just 50 meters from the car.

Portuguese Christmas

I always get a lot of questions about the traditional Portuguese Christmas. And especially about the 'Bacalhau'. The dried and salted codfish. It's the traditional Christmas dinner. But there is a lot more....

Afterwards the plate looked almost as clean ;-)

Off course some local wine.

But after the 'Bacalhau' the sweets come out. First the 'Bolo Rei' the traditional cake with fruits. And after that a lot more.

The 'Pão de Ló', a sweet cake.

And my and Ella's favourite, a plate full of 'Rabanadas'. A kind of pancakes with an inside that's a lot like pudding.

And off course there is a lot more. Chocolate, nuts and other sweets. Enough to fill your belly for days. Now we wait for Christmas lunch, which is even better ;-)

Went from Innsbruck to the Pitztal. A glacier area with tops till 3774m high.

We went up into the mountains and played with the elements. Hauling winds made it very tricky. Zero visibility and icecold!

Oh boy did we found that snow. During the night a big storm came over and snow dumped nonstop.

It wasn't as sunny as the other days and the wave forecast wasn't great, but the temperature was nice. And the sun would be shining during lunch hours. So Another trip to the beach ;-)

Lunch in the sun was perfect!!

Waves were small but with a light off shore breeze they were nice to play with.

When the clouds came, it looked impressive. But in this case it was like we say: "Barking dogs don't bite" ;-)

Sun, sand and waves

While David is getting high on white powder(snow), we headed to Portugal for our usual X-mas trip. The journey was challenging. Heavy rain and strong headwinds (30knts and more) for over 1400km. Fuel efficiency dropped at least 10% ;-)

But it's always nice to be on the road. Especially when there is almost no holiday traffic. In France I set the cruise control to 130km/h and in 2 hours I only touched the brakes twice. Try that in Holland ;-)

We had a stopover in Burgos, where we had a most delicious dinner. It's worth sharing, so here's a picture of the hotel and Restaurant Azofra in burgos.

Yesterday we went to the beach.

Sun and surf were up, so everybody was happy.

Time to dig a hole ;-)

West is a tricky wind direction at the our coast. Onshore.
There are some places where you can find side-off conditions..

The Raging ball (in Dutch : Razende bol) is one of them. It's a permanent sandbar.

The only other frequent visitors are wildlife. Repect them!

Warning: this place is not for the "average Joe" surfer...
far away from the coast, currents.. etc. Know what you are doing when you visit this place.
Don't go alone and be prepared!

Sunday.. Windy again. Should I go to the coast?.. Tired of driving over the crowded highway + changing wind direction I opted for the easy way. No stress just fun, the classic back in the days feeling. So drove with a smile over the small empty winding roads to my good old homebreak.

Sun in the face, music on the radio, green fields, trees bending in the wind...

yes, made the right choice...

When I arrived at the water the wind was hauling. Rigged my 4.2 and hit the water.

After some hours I jumped into my clothes and took the camera.

Tricky/difficult into the sun shooting...

Team Fox made the same choice and spend their sunday well ;-)

Today I had a nice morning session at Ouddorp. Steady wind and beautiful hip to shoulder high lines to ride. I made a great aerial and my last ride counted at least 8 bottomturns and at least 4 topturns off the lip.... nice!!! Bad news is I twisted my foot once more and am not sure if it's wise to sail tomorrow.... but let's decide that tomorrow ;-)

After that I went to the workshop to get the board I repaired and upgraded for Edwin. A SOS Rocket Fish 82. He wanted it turned into a trifin. So before putting it in the van I made some shots.

Very curious in how it sails after the modification.

Last weekend it was beautiful weather so we grabbed the van and headed to the water. It's nice to park the car close to the lake and just make it your home for the day.

We had a nice lunch in the sun.

Slayer board

This board is for a Slayer fan who told Zephaniah Carrigg what to do whatever he wanted as long as it was carbon fiber on the bottom and Slayer was somehow worked into the deck. He googled images for Slayer and found this pinball game. The outcome is insane!! How nice did he use the art of resin tinting!

Not a lot of pain, but a BIG smile!! After being on the water for over 20hrs since wednesday, the wind finally dropped.... I had all kinds of conditions. Left foot front, right foot front, side-on, full onshore, side-off, Chop, strong current, smooth, big waves, small waves, sun, rain, hail.... It seemd like a full windsurf season in one week ;-)
